Hinduism was practiced by my family since forever. As a child I was introduced to many gods. Some were beings with human body and animal heads while some other had several deformities like 4 heads and 16 hands. God was presented as the super power who always had one eye upon us and would eventually punish us for our wrong deeds. I was a child whose curiosity doubled up when it came to magic. All the wars and the weapons, Boons and Meditation( Tapasya), Deeds and Karma intrigued me to know entirety of god.
I was never sure whether i believed god or not, I still am not. I read almost everything i can just to analyze why the supreme power executed in a particular way when a situation raised. I considered his Brain to be similar to mine and wanted to examine his thoughts (I think decoding would be a better term!)
In this post I want to compare and contrast between Lord Ram and Lord shiva.
Introduction:
Lord Shiva is one among the three gods who were created by Goddess Shakthi. Goddess Shakthi created Lord Brahma, to create the world and see to it that it is populated, Lord Vishnu, to show a righteous path to every being that is being created and Lord Shiva, to maintain the balance by dissolving the creation into him after a particular period of time( That is why he is referred to as Hara, which means extract or simply take away). It is told in Purana's that Lord Shiva will destroy the universe( apart from Kashi) some day when there is no equilibrium between the good and bad, thus the name Rudra Latched on to him. Goddess Shakthi or the mother universe got married to Shiva and her two other forms Saraswati and Lakshmi got married to Brahma and Vishnu respectively.
Lord Ram was supposed to be born several hundred Years later to a king named Dasaratha. There was a man named Ravan, who was the greatest devotee of lord Shiva. He prayed for several years for nothing but love of lord Shiva. Shiva could never say no to his devotees. Shiva was innocent and easy to please( hence the name Bholenath) Ravan became stronger and stronger each day. There came a time where Ravan was supposed to die and no one could kill him because of his good deeds. Ravan was made to commit sin's by other gods and Lord ram was born as a human to kill a danav (ravan)
As a Husband:

Shiva was different. Shivam means nothing but simplicity. Shiva never bothered much about his looks. He careless left his hair to grow. He wore snakes as ornament around his neck . He sat on tiger skin on a hard stone. He is supposed to live on alms. He smears his body with ashes(bhasma) and is believed to reside in burial grounds. He never asked his wife to be the same. She was treated like a princess. She was allowed to do and be like she wished. Her ideas were given equal importance to his. There are several situations which explained that respect and eternal love towards his wife. Godess shakthi was born to Daksha, A king who was a son of Brahma himself. She wished to get married to shiva. She prayed and mediated for years untill her wish was fulfilled. Daksha disliked shiva, so he decided to insult him by performing a yagnya and not inviting his son-in law and daughter. Sati badly wanted to visit her parents. Shiva explained her that she should not visit any one's place without an invitation. Sati was not convinced(it was her parents home afterall, she dint require any invitation) Shiva did not compel her. He never emotionally blackmailed her. He let her go because he couldn't say no. Sati was insulted by her father in a broad court infront of every god. She couldnt live anylonger bearing that insult so she comitted suicide. Shiva's anger was at greatest extent. He could not think of a life without his wife. He took the corpse of his wife on his shoulders and started to perform his special way of dance expressing anger(Rudra Thandavam). He wouldnt stop and the world started to shudder. Lord vishnu released his sudarshana chakra to dispose the corpse of sati hoping that would calm shiva. Shiva went back to meditation untill sati was reborn as parvati and was remarried to shiva.
At the wedding, with Parvati, Parvati's Mother saw shiva in his appearance and was in deep distress that her princess would be married to a person who looked no less than a ghost. Parvati requested shiva to find a solution and just for her he changed himself into a handsome prince at his wedding. He never asked her to adjust. In another instance, Gods and the demons formed a pact and started churning the ocean of milk(ksheera sagara madhanam) for Amrith( a nectar which gave imortality wen consumed) . Several things came out of the ocean which were rightfully distributed. Suddenly An immense dangerous poison emerged from the ocean. Both the gods and demons were petrified. Shiva stepped forward and looked at his wife. Parvati understood what he wanted to do. He wanted to drink it and save the world. She knew there would be no world without him. She signalled him to proceed. Even though it was his decision he waned her opinion before moving further. Parvati walked up to him and tangled his neck and made sure the poison stayed locked in his throat forever, leaving him a blue throat ( thus the name garala kanta or Neelkant). There was another instance where Goddess Ganga was called on to the earth by Bhagirath. Earth could not handle the force of ganga, so the world prayed for a solution so Shiva accepted that Ganga would stay on his head locked by his hair and only a tolerable flow would be allowed on earth.(thus the name Gangadhara) Now how would people depict the relationship between Ganga and Shiva? Parvati instantly said Ganga would also be refereed as his wife along with her. It was neither lust nor love, It was responsibility Shiva had towards Ganga and Parvati understood it.

Ram was treated like a prince and was familiar with all kshatria dharma ( a must followed rule book for every king). He is known for following dharma( though he killed Vali from behind) Ram happily agreed to stay in forests for 14 years because his father promised his step mom a boon. He never asked Sita to accompany and asked her to stay safe at the palace. Sita would never bear to stay away from her husband. she simply followed him sacrificing every royal benefit. She lived in dense forests and slept on ground. One day she was kidnapped by Ravan. She was kept hostage. Ravan tried everything to convince her. she stayed calm and pure. She told whoever it is apart from her husband they are equal to a twig and nothing more. Ram fought a fierce battle with Ravan and won. Sita was happy to finally re unite with her husband. Ram stopped her before accepting. she was told to prove her piety before accepting. Sita was shocked, after bearing all that torture she found out that trust was lacking in the relationship. she did not despise Ram she agreed to go through Agni pareeksha. Ram finally believed when God of fire himself testified her purity. They returned back to their country Ram was the new king and his wife was the queen. One fine day when Sita was expecting a baby, Ram banishes Sita because he notices that one of the washer man says Sita couldn't have maintained her character and she is unfit to be the queen. Sita was left in a forest. She gave birth to two baby boys Luv and Kush. One fine day Ram meets his children and realizes his mistake. Sita refuses to return back and goes back to Bhumi devi (her mother). Ram gives his kingdom to his son's and commits suicide by drowning into River Sarayu.
Now I still am confused as why are we told to perform puja's to get a husband like Ram? A man who left for forests without thinking about the welfare of his people and who doubted his wife and did not accept her untill the agni pareeksha, A man who abandoned his wife and his children because society had some doubts?
Why not a man who thought of his wife as an equal? why not a man who could not be seperable from his wife? why not a man who never asked her the necessity to create a son without consulting him? why not a man who went against every rule of universe to give her son's life back to see her happy? Why not Shiva?
